Wing Commander Martin’s remarkable Sunderland story has been recorded by the Pembroke Dock Sunderland Trust. Derek Martin was chief guest at the launch of the Sunderland Trust in April 2007.

Among the pilots who flew Sunderland T9044 is Wing Commander Derek Martin OBE.

In September 1940 Wing Commander Martin, then just 20-years-old,
piloted T9044 on its delivery flight from Pembroke Dock to Oban, on Scotland’s west coast.

He was involved with Sunderlands for much of World War II, returning
to Pembroke Dock to command a ferry training unit which flew dozens
of aircraft to squadrons based in many war theatres.
